If you do not yet have such a report, then we recommend you first follow the course <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/training\/the-report-writer\/\" href=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/training\/the-report-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Report Writer.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting started<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the purposes of this guide, we have already created a Source report, showing the total number of client matters introduced to us by a particular referrer. We will use this report to create a chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Opening your existing report<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open the report designer and log in. Click the Open button on the top ribbon and locate your report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66319\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right click your report and choose Open\/Edit\/Clone. We will choose Clone to create a copy of the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"408\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ospreyapproach2022.wireddemo.co.uk\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-9.png 408w, https:\/\/ospreyapproach2022.wireddemo.co.uk\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-9-300x132.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An identical copy of your original report will open. You may save this now if you wish with a new name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Placing your chart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now our report is open, we need to decide where to place the chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"615\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ospreyapproach2022.wireddemo.co.uk\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-10.png 615w, https:\/\/ospreyapproach2022.wireddemo.co.uk\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-10-300x174.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can either put it at the beginning of the report, or at the end. We will place ours in the report header so that it appears on the first page of the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expand the Report Header to make it large enough to insert your chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/expand-header.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23631\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, select the Chart icon from the Toolbox on the left hand side <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"107\" height=\"34\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66332\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;and drag it into the Report Header. The Chart Wizard will open automatically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/insert-chart.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23632\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may now choose an optional type of chart, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/guides\/report-writer-creating-charts\/#option-1-create-a-pie-chart\">Pie<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/guides\/report-writer-creating-charts\/#option-2-create-a-bar-chart\">Bar<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Option 1 &#8211; Create a Pie Chart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this example, we will be creating a Pie Chart to display the total number of matters introduced by each referral source or introducer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select Pie Series from the Chart Type drop down list, then the style of Pie Chart you would prefer. Click Next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/chart-type.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23633\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you wish, you may now choose a colour palette and style for your chart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/palette-style.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23634\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the Data option from the Construction section on the left hand panel, then the Auto-Created Series tab. Select Data Member drop down list and double click your report view name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/data-member.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23635\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the Series Binding tab. In the Argument Properties section, select and double click your Source of Business field in the Argument box. This tells the graph which field we are counting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/argument.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23636\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Value Properties box set the Binding Mode to Summary Function \u2013 this tells the report to give us the total for each source of business, and in the summary function, select Count. This tells the report to Count the number of entries to find per source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/binding.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23637\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click Finish. Select the Print Preview tab and run your report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are 7 matters for the report. 1 from Advert, 2 for Estate Agent, 2 from the newspaper, and 1 each for Recommendation and Yellow Pages. This graph type defaults to showing you as a percentage of the whole:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/preview.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23638\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can now change the graph to show the actual number of matters per source rather than percent, and have the legend and data points show the name of each source alongside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return to the Report Designer ribbon tab and click the &gt; button in the top right hand corner of the chart. Select Run Wizard. Select the Series menu on the left, then the Point Options tab on the right hand side. Set Point View to Argument and Values. Untick Value as Percent. Now click Finish, then Print Preview your report again. The legend and the graph now have labels and a count of the matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/tidygraph.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23805\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can experiment with the other options in the Chart Wizard. Further help can be found at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.devexpress.com\/WindowsForms\/7039\/Controls-and-Libraries\/Chart-Control\/Design-Time-Features\/Chart-Wizard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/documentation.devexpress.com\/WindowsForms\/7039\/Controls-and-Libraries\/Chart-Control\/Design-Time-Features\/Chart-Wizard<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h2 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Option 2 &#8211; Create a Bar Chart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this example, we will be creating a Bar Chart to display the total commission received by each referral source or introducer, along with the number of matters they have introduced. Please note that if numeric sum values are required in your chart, then the report must be based on a stored procedure rather than a view (contact support if you are unsure of this).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select Bar Series from the Chart Type drop down list. Select the style of Bar chart you would prefer, then click Next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/bartype.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23807\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may now choose a colour palette and a Style if you wish, then click Next:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/colour-palette.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23808\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the Data option from the Construction section on the left hand panel, then the Auto-Created Series tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select Data Member drop down list and choose your stored procedure name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/datasource.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23809\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the Series menu. You should find that two Series have been added by default. Each Series represents the data that we want to count. We can rename them to make it easier to navigate the wizard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rename Series 1 to Commission Received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rename Series 2 to Matters Introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Rename-series.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23810\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navigate to the Data menu, Series Binding tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against the Commission Received Series, in the Argument Properties box, set the Argument to Source of Business \u2013 this tells the report we are looking at data BY source of business. In the Value Properties box, set the Binding mode to Summary Function, and set the Summary Function box to SUM(Introducer Commission). This tells the report that for each source of business from the argument box above, we want to see the sum of Introducer Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/comm-recd.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23811\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against the Matters Introduced Series, in the Argument Properties box, set the Argument to Source of Business \u2013 this tells the report we are looking at data BY source of business. In the Value Properties box, set the Binding mode to Summary Function, and set the Summary Function box to COUNT(). This tells the report that for each source of business from the argument box above, we want to see the count of matters or rows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1916\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/support.ospreyapproach.com\/content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/matt-intro.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23812\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For both series&#8217;, navigate to the Point Options tab and change the Point View to Argument and Values.
